In the case of student-athletes of intercollegiate sports, there are two standards of admission eligibilities that are required from them—NCAA eligibility and the requirements of their chosen university.
Athletes accepted into the University of Georgia are now competing with their nonstudent-athletic peers as the NCAA adopts more competitive academic terms. However, it is the latter that asks the question whether student-athletes are enrolling into collegiate universities based on NCAA requirements with less of an influence on admissions.
Data provided to CNN from the university displayed three areas of athletic programs—football, men’s and women’s basketball—of students who took the SAT I and ACT between 2007 and 2012. In some cases, both standardized tests were taken by a student.
The lowest SAT scored by a male basketball player was 770, 810 for a female basketball player, and 570 for a football player. In total of the 240 players who test scores were provided the average SAT score for critical reading and math combined was 1004—the highest score possible is 2400.
In the highest athletic revenue generating program—football—the average score among the players was 1010, the highest being 1450.

Out of the total 214 players, 51 percent scored between 1000 and 1999 on their SAT.
Statistics published on the UGA undergraduate admissions blog, the 2012’s freshmen class mid-50 percent range of the SAT in critical reading and math was between 1190 and 1350.
The GPA of those accepted straight from high school calculated by their core curriculum courses accepted by UGA ranged from 3.74 and 4.04.
The average GPA belonging to college freshmen of UGA is 3.83 according to collegedata.com.
In NCAA division I’s world of sports, athletes currently need a minimum GPA of 2.00 under eligibility requirements.
Once these students enroll into college full-time they are not just athletes, they are students who are held to a lesser academic standard than nonstudent-athletes.
For division 1, GPAs are matched to standardized test scores on a sliding scale. An athlete who received a GPA of 2.00 in their core courses are required to have a 1010 on their SAT; whereas, an athlete who received a 4.00 would only need a combined math and critical reading of 400.
Defensive-end senior, Garrison Smith, 22, prepared for his standardized tests purely on luck.
“I just went in and took it, no studying,” said Smith.
After August 1, 2016, student-athletes looking to play college sports under division I and not be redshirted will need a minimum GPA of 2.3.
